Thought They Were Decorations? What Tsuba Ring, Tsuka-maki Wrapping, and Sageo String Are Really For

The TSUBA are these ring guards on katana handles. There are actually 4 main reasons for this small round piece of metal.

1. To balance the sword
2. To protect the hand
3. To make it easier to draw the sword
4. To wish for victory and prosperity

The blade is of course heavier than the handle (that is mainly made from wood), so the metal TSUBA (weighing about 50~200g depending on the design) functions as a weight balance.

Second, when you stab with the katana, the TSUBA will prevent your hand
from accidently slipping towards your blade.

Third, you can use the TSUBA to smoothly draw the sword by pushing it with your thumb.

Lastly, there are hundreds of designs for TSUBA and they each have a meaning to wish for victory on the battlefield or the prosperity of your family.

By the way, you might have seen some katana that don’t have a TSUBA, but these are called “合口拵 Aikuchi-gochirae” and they are a proper design. It is mainly seen on “短刀 Tantō” short daggers and the main purpose was to make it easier to carry around.
