Infant / newborn length measurement assessment: If you work as a pediatric nurse, you will often be required to perform assessments and measurements on children, including infants/newborns. This helps to ensure there are no developmental or nutritional problems and that the child is growing as it should.

To measure an infant/newborn's length (height), you'll want to place the child on a stable surface. The goal is to measure from head to heel, and you may need assistance in holding the child steady.

Many healthcare facilities still use the method of using a pen to mark at the head and heel. This is usually done on the roll paper on the small bench/bed that most pediatric facilities use. To use this method, mark at the child's head and heel, and then measure the marks and record the length.

Alternatively, you can use a stadiometer that is designed to measure infant length.

A normal newborn length is around 18-22 inches.
